Portland State University District Plan

Blurring the boundaries between campus and city

Client: Portland State University, Portland, OR

Located in the heart of downtown Portland, Portland State University (PSU) is a large and dynamic urban research institution with over 28,000 undergraduate and graduate students. With rapid growth in enrollment and research activity, it has formed strong partnerships with the city, peer institutions, and local businesses to develop new academic, student life, and residential facilities.

The Portland State University District Framework Plan proposes a development strategy that leverages these partnerships in an integrated, mixed-use manner to guide the university's future growth within the University District.

Boundaries between public and private are blurred; uses are not only mixed, but shared; and a transparency permeates the environment, making the academic and social life of the university visible to all.

Building on the relationship between the city and PSU, the University District Framework Plan proposes a new model of urban development that is neither city nor campus, but a unique fusion of the two.
